La Cumbre’s Full Nelson DIPA: A Review

Run. Don’t walk to La Cumbre Brewing Company in Albuquerque’s northeast industrial district. When this popular brewery releases a new seasonal beer you’d better get there quick.

On Friday August 17th, the brewery unleashed its newest concoction on the ABQ craft beer scene. The Pina Quercus is a tequila barrel-aged ale brewed with pineapple. Unfortunately, I  missed the boat on this tart, tropical delight. I visited their main taproom just three days after the release and they already ran out! I talked to a couple of folks who tasted the Pina Quercus and the consensus opinion was . . . it is delicious (especially for you tart beer and pineapple lovers)! Fret not my fellow beer lovers. La Cumbre opened its doors today (Monday) to its brand new west side taproom where, you can get the Pina Quercus on tap for as long as it lasts. Here are the stats on the exclusive pineapple tart.

Since I wasn’t able to taste the Pina Quercus during my Sunday visit, I asked the beertender what other brews are peaking the public’s interest. He suggested the Full Nelson Double India Pale Ale. And so, my journey towards hopville began. Pint in hand, I sipped the foamy head that was followed by a smooth, full-bodied yet subtlety-hopped liquid.

I love a good DIPA. However, some can be overly boozy and heavy handed with the hoppiness. The Full Nelson proved to be a more gentlemanly DIPA. Yes, the Nelson Sauvin hops (from New Zealand) do provide a an excellent aroma, they don’t necessarily punch you in the face with bitterness (unlike the hops used in La Cumbre’s Elevated and Project Dank).  Instead, you get a sort of grapey taste with mild bitter bite. Don’t get me wrong, the Full Nelson is off the charts in IBU (International Bittering Units) ,it is a DIPA after all. Its just a little bit smoother and less abrasive than other craft DIPAs. By the end of my pint, I felt a nice strong buzz. With an ABV (Alcohol By Volume) of 8.5 percent, its one and done for me with this DIPA.

Oh and by the way, the Full Nelson paired well with the sweet and spicy barbecue pulled pork served with baked beans and coleslaw from local food truck, Bottoms Up BBQ!

Overall, I’d rate the Full Nelson a solid 7/10 as far as DIPAs go. But please, get out there and try it for yourself!
